IBS-D and Leaky gut

What’s the study about?

Investigating the effects of a food supplement (two natural compounds) on gut barrier function.

Who can take part?

  • Symptoms of IBS with diarrhoea
  • Live in UK and able to come to clinic in person

What’s involved?

  • Visit Manchester clinic in person 3 times
  •  Take 1 capsule daily for 3 weeks
  • Complete a daily bowel diary
  • Participation duration: ~ 5 weeks

What’s the study about?

Investigating the effects of a combined food supplement to see whether it could benefit IBS-D sufferers (compared to a placebo).

Who can take part?

  • Symptoms of IBS with diarrhoea
  • Live in UK (able to complete remote) 

What’s involved?

  • Visit the clinic in-person 4 times over ~ 10 weeks
  • Take the study capsules as directed for 8 weeks
  • Complete daily bowel diaries
  • Participation duration: ~ 10 weeks

What’s the study about?

Investigating the effect of magnetic stimulation on the pelvic floor as a treatment for faecal incontinence.

Who can take part?

  • Female
  • 18 years or older
  • Had faecal incontinence for more than 6 months
  • Live in the UK, able to come in clinic (London)

What’s involved?

  • Attend 10 treatment sessions twice a week
  • Attend 12 visits in total over a 10 weeks
  • Participation duration: ~ 10 weeks trail period/ ~ 3 month follow up call post trial.

What was the study about?

The study involves taking bacteria from  healthy individuals and transplanting them into individuals with a disease that could be related to the bacteria in the gut.

Who took part?

  • Have IBS with diarrhoea with no other conditions
  • Live in UK and able to come to clinic in person

What was involved?

  • Visit clinic in person 6 times over 9 week period
  • Take treatment as directed

Research study

Investigating the effects of probiotics in the microbiome of healthy people

What was the study about?

We gave 41 healthy adults a multi-strain probiotic for 8 weeks and looked at the gut microbiome before and after.

Who took part?

  • 41 healthy adults

What was involved?

The healthy participants were given a multi-strain probiotics over an 8 week period.

Overview of findings

The probiotic supplementation did not change the overall diversity of the gut microbiome in our healthy adults, some changes in functional pathways of the gut microbiome were seen.

Research study

Exploring whether a structural Gaviscon regime helps individuals manage symptoms prior to reflux testing after stopping acid suppression therapy.

What was the study about?

Individuals randomised  to a scheduled Gaviscon regime or standard prep prior to reflux testing.

Who took part?

  • Individuals with acid reflux symptoms

What was involved?

  • Took Gaviscon liquid for 4 times per day (once after every meal and once before bed)

Overview of findings

The individuals taking the structured regimen of Gaviscon experienced less symptoms.

Research study

Investigating enzyme-rich malt extract (ERME™) for the treatment of chronic constipation.

What was the study about?

We gave 20 individuals with constipation ERME (around 1 tablespoon with food for 4 weeks twice a day).

Who took part?

  • Individuals with constipation

What was involved?

  • Gave 20 individuals with constipation the enzyme-rich malt extract (around 1 tablespoon with food for 4 weeks twice a day)

Overview of findings

Taking ERME appeared to help constipation and reduce daily symptoms of abdominal pain and bloating.
