The Verdict

Root may be helpful for constipation and increasing levels of beneficial bacteria in the gut, but it needs to undergo peer-reviewed clinical studies before claims can be supported.

The Research

Root conducted a small in-house clinical study of their product, which has not been subject to peer review and could be open to bias.

The study randomized 45 adults with constipation into three groups of 15 on low 200mg root dose, standard 600mg dose, or placebo for 30 days.

There was a significant improvement in daily bowel movements in the standard 600mg group as well as a reduction in some gastrointestinal symptoms and increase in beneficial groups of bacteria. However, statistical P values are not reported.

Of the individual strains in this product, a product containing bother LPL28, BLI-02, and TYCA06 have not been studied independently in human clinical trials to show particular benefit.

AP32 has been shown to be safe in human infants and may increase levels of other Lactobacillus in the infant gut. To our knowledge, there is no independent trials AP32 in adults.
