IBS-D leaky gut trial

Welcome to Tummy MOT’s latest study.

IBS affects many people in the UK and around the world. And it can have a big impact on quality of life. The causes are complex, but gut bacteria imbalances and changes to gut permeability (aka “leaky gut”) seem to be significant factors.

It’s really important to find safe and effective non-pharmacological treatments for IBS-D – and we’re looking for people to take part in this groundbreaking study so we can advance the science.

What's the study about?

In this research trial, the team of experts at The Functional Gut Clinic will be investigating the effects of a food supplement (containing two natural compounds) on gut barrier function, to assess whether they could help to treat a leaky gut in people with IBS-D.

This is your opportunity to be part of innovative research and help us to understand the effects of this supplement on IBS-D for improving the lives of sufferers.

More about the food supplement

Who can take part?

We’re looking for people who:

  • Have IBS with diarrhoea (IBS-D), with no other conditions that could explain your symptoms
  • Live in the UK and are able to come in-person to our Manchester clinic
  • Are happy to take our tests in-clinic and give samples as explained by our team

As well as meeting the criteria for IBS-D*, you’ll also need to meet some other key inclusion and exclusion criteria to take part. This will be assessed by a member of the study team.

What will be involved?

We’ve designed the study so it’s as easy as possible for people to take part.

As a participant, you’ll be asked to:

  • Visit The Functional Gut Clinic in Manchester in-person 3 times (2 visits will be 8 hours) over a 5-6 week period – all expenses paid
  • Take the capsules as directed for 3 weeks and complete a bowel diary
  • Do some simple tests with our clinic team and give some samples

You’ll be able to claim up to £100 per visit for inconvenience payments and you’ll be fully reimbursed for all travel expenses.

How can I apply?

Simply answer a few questions on our application form here. Our team will then be in touch to chat with you about the study in more detail.
