What does the research say?
Some of the individual strains in Seed DS-01 have been studied in clinical trials for digestive health (constipation), dermatological health (atopic dermatitis) and cardiovascular health (cholesterol), but this product and it’s specific combination of bacteria has not been studied clinically.
According to their website, there are two ongoing clinical studies in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and in people following antibiotic therapy. However, results are not yet available.
Some of the strains in this product have only been shown to have benefits in animal or lab-based studies, but not in human clinical trials. Also, it is not clear on the dose of each individual strain in this product. Therefore, we cannot confirm whether the levels of individual strains in this product are sufficient when compared to randomized, controlled trials.
Pomegranate polyphenols have been shown to have a prebiotic effect although the dose in one daily capsule of DS-01 (~160 mg) may be too low to have any prebiotic effects when compared to clinical trials (300-1000mg).
An independent, unpublished study with SHIME (Simulator of Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem) found that around 100% of the bacteria in Seed DS-01 reach the colon alive. However, this is an in vitro (lab-based) model.
The Verdict
DS-01 contains individual strains that may be helpful for some aspects of digestive, dermatological, and cardiovascular health. However, the combination of probiotics at these doses found in DS-01 needs to first be investigated clinically before claims can be supported.
